Home Garden Program Coordinator

 

 Job Description

We will accomplish this by providing home garden supplies, monthly gardening workshops, mentorship, and garden visits to address the needs of food access and insecurity in the community. 

Location: San Jose, CA 

Job Title: Home Garden Program Coordinator

Job Type: Full-time 40 hours per week 

Salary: $42,000

Job Description: 

Essential job functions: With support from the Home Garden Program Manager, the Home Garden 

Program Coordinator will assist with program organization, implementing home 

garden programming and assist with tracking all program data. 

 

Tasks include, but are not limited to: 

 

  • Travel throughout Santa Clara County to facilitate monthly organic gardening workshops for participants of the Home Garden Program. (Currently conducted online due to COVID-19 restrictions)

  • Communicate via email, phone calls, text messages, or in person, on a monthly basis with participants regarding workshops, attendance, and upcoming events.

  • Collect and enter data monthly for participant attendance, home visits, and check-ins

  • Schedule and conduct monthly check-ins, and quarterly garden visits with participants 

  • Troubleshoot garden issues including diseases and pests using organic methods

  • Organize and assist with the distribution of garden materials (heavy lifting, 30-40 lb bags) 

  • Assist with Planting Weeks and any other Home Garden Program events

  • Represent the Home Garden Program and develop partnerships within the community. 

  • In coordination with the Home Garden Program Manager, recruit and enroll program participants, volunteers and interns. 

  • Assist customers with sales of seedlings at the site  

  • Other duties as assigned by Home Garden Program Manager and/or Executive Director


 

Skills/Qualifications: 

  • Must have regular/reliable access to a vehicle with appropriate insurance for transportation 

  • Must be detail oriented and accurately report program attendance and other participant statistics

  • Experience working in a multiethnic community environment 

  • Ability to develop professional relationships with program participants regardless of language barriers, cultural differences, or physical/mental abilities 

  • Must be extremely organized and have the ability to prioritize projects to meet deadlines 

  • consistently 

  • Must be able to work independently and collaboratively in a team, show creativity, and ability to initiate and complete projects with limited supervision 

  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish or English/Vietnamese  required 

  • At least 1 year of teaching or group facilitation preferred 

  • At least 1 year of experience growing organic vegetables and urban gardening preferred 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required

  • Excellent computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Suite, Mailchimp, and Canva 

  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, bend, and twist to complete garden projects and activities

  • Experience operating power tools, building, and assembling irrigation systems is a plus

 

Education: 

Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Community Development, or Education strongly preferred. 

Master Gardener’s certification is strongly preferred. 

Other related coursework or experience can be substituted.

Super Jardineros Coordinator

Job Description: 

Essential job functions:  With support from the Greenhouse and Super Jardineros Manager, facilitates Super Jardineros workshops and activities and provides support with sales and marketing.

 

Tasks include, but are not limited to: 

  • In collaboration with the Home Garden Manager, recruit new participants for the Super Jardineros Program. 

  • Communicate via email, phone calls, text messages, or in person, on a monthly basis with Super Jardineros Program participants.

  • Schedule and facilitate workshops.

  • Schedule and conduct monthly check-ins, and quarterly garden visits with participants 

  • Create and upload training videos to online learning platforms, as needed. 

  • Coordinate the seedling production with Super Jardineros Manager following the planting schedule developed for all Valley Verde programs 

  • Provide technical support for Super Jardineros (Planning, Best Practices, IPM, etc)

  • Coordinate distribution of growing supplies (growing medium, planters, trays, etc) 

  • In collaboration with the Greenhouse Manager, track and input program data.

  • Evaluate quality seedlings and coordinate sales

  • Provide support with seedling sales (online and in person), subscriptions, and marketing material.  

  • Create Social Media content for the Super Jardineros Program.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Greenhouse Manager

  • At least 1 year of teaching or group facilitation preferred 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required

  • Excellent computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Suite, Mailchimp, Google Classroom, Zoom, Google Meet, YouTube, editing videos software, and Canva. 

  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift 25-30lbs,   bend, and twist to complete garden projects and activities.

  • Experience operating power tools, building, and assembling irrigation systems is a plus.

 

Education: 

Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Horticultural or Crop Science strongly preferred. 

Master Gardener’s certification is strongly preferred. 

Other related coursework or experience can be substituted.
