Greenhouse Coordinator

 

 Job Description

 

“Valley Verde is dedicated to building healthy and resilient communities by providing low-income families educational programs, edible gardens, and micro-entrepreneurship opportunities that create food security and lead to self-sufficiency.”

We will accomplish this by providing home garden supplies, monthly gardening workshops, mentorship, and greenhouse visits to address the needs of food access and insecurity in the community. 

Location: San Jose, CA 

Job Title: Greenhouse Coordinator

Job Type: Full-time 40 hours per week

Job Description: 

Greenhouse Coordinator essential job functions: 

With support from the Greenhouse Manager, the Greenhouse Coordinator will maintain the gardens, and help with daily greenhouse operations. This will involve: 

  • Maintain an up to date inventory of seedlings and greenhouse supplies.

  • Plant, transplant, and prepare seedlings for transportation during the planting seasons (February to April and August to October). 

  • Inspect and maintain irrigation system in the gardens and greenhouses.

  • In collaboration with the Greenhouse Manager, develop Integrated Pest Management Plan for controlling pests in the demonstration gardens.

  • In collaboration with the Greenhouse Manager, evaluate the planting season. 

  • Manage, follow up with, and  support the program participants.

  • Facilitate monthly workshops on climate change, sustainability, organic gardening, and composting. 

  • Collect year-long data for end of year evaluation

  • Represent the San Jose Garden Programs and develop partnerships within the community. 


 

Skills/Qualifications:  

  • Having a car and car insurance for transportation is essential. 

  • Comfortable working in a multiethnic community environment. 

  • Ability to develop relations with program participants regardless of language barriers or physical disabilities. 

  • Must be extremely organized and have the ability to prioritize projects to meet deadlines consistently. 

  • Must be able to work independently, show creativity, ability to initiate projects with limited supervision. 

  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish, English/Vietnamese, or English/Mandarin required. 

  • At least 1 year of teaching or group facilitation preferred. 

  • At least 1 year of experience growing organic vegetables, integrated pest management, and urban gardening preferred. 

  • Strong writing skills desired. 

  • Excellent computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google products, Mailchimp, and Canva. 

  • Able to lift 35lbs
