- Cabbages don't mind full sun or partial shade, but they do like fertile soil that will retain moisture. Cabbage requires consistently moist soil. While it won't tolerate sitting in wet, soggy soil, it needs regular watering to produce its leafy heads. Water your cabbage once a week, applying 1 1/2 inches of water to the soil. If the soil is dry to a depth of 3 inches, water more frequently.Cabbages grow best in slightly alkaline soil (a pH of at least 6.8). Most importantly, the soil must be firm to be able to support the heads that may grow to be up to 5 pounds.Avoid planting cabbages in the same spot where you have grown in the past three years broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and/or Brussel sprouts.Harvest:Harvest your brunswick cabbage once it forms a heart and it is solid all the way through. cut off the heads with a sharp knife and use them immediately.
