Genovese basil is one of the most popular basils for culinary use, particularly for its use in pesto, the traditional Genoese sauce. This Italian variety has extremely tender, fragrant, extra-large, dark green leaves and is superb for pesto.

Planting: once all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures are consistenly between 65°F and 70°F , plant seedlings in full sun or partial shade, 8" to 12" apart, in nutrient rich soil in the ground, raised beds, or in a pot or container at least 8" deep (soil can be amended with compost or worm castings 2 weeks prior to planting).
Watering: water regularly as the plants benefit from consistent moisture, but do not let the plant sit in soggy soil, aim for damp soil and water deeply, as this promotes strong root growth.
Harvesting: harvest leaves as needed by pinching or snipping stems above another set of leaves. Pinching/harvesting the leaves early and often encourages branching and bushy growth.
